Rather than sending along an “Inspiring Instagram” account, I wanted to change things up this Friday and give you a different type of positive resource instead.
One of my favorite FB pages to follow is A Mighty Girl because it often posts thought-provoking articles for parents and educators about how to best support girls in growing up to be confident and healthy young women. In this overstimulated age where the media is constantly pushing the boundaries of violence and sexualization, parents, educators and girls alike can struggle to find healthy media representations of women. That’s what makes A Mighty Girl so awesome—it posts lists of amazing books, toys, movies/TV, and music that support girls in developing a healthy body image, positive peer relationships, and tackling difficult issues in life. One list I wanted to share with you today is “20 Mighty Girl Books for Tweens & Teens About Healthy Relationships.” Here’s what A Mighty Girl wrote about the list and its importance: “As tweens and teens enter the new world of romantic relationships, it can be challenging for them to figure out how this new type of relationship works and to tell if their relationship is a healthy one. With conflicting messages from media -- think of the romantic comedy trope of the boy who won't accept a girl saying no -- it can be hard for kids to figure out what healthy romantic love really looks like. In fact, studies show that one in three US teens will experience physical, emotional, or sexual abuse from a romantic partner before they reach adulthood. Parents can help teens make sense of what can be a confusing time by talking them about what makes a healthy partnership -- and how to recognize amanipulative or abusive one. In today's blog post, we've showcased a variety ofMighty Girl books about all aspects of romantic love, as well as a selection of resources for both teens and parents about how to recognize, avoid, or leave unhealthy relationships. By sharing these stories, and talking about what makes real love so empowering and special, we can help the next generation find the loving, respectful partners they deserve.” Whether you are a teen, parent, or educator, I HIGHLY recommend checking out this list (click here) and reading one of these books. It will help you start the conversation on what a healthy relationship looks like—and what you and your teen deserve. Happy reading! Shandra

Today’s “Inspiring Instagram” to check out is @actingonadream. This account is “a community of people here to tell you that anything is possible.” Especially this week, with a lot of negatively and hate in the news, around the world, in this country, and often in our social media newsfeeds, it’s important to remember to stand up for your dreams, to stand up for what you believe in, to share your voice, and to continue to let yourself be inspired. This account has motivational quotes all around supporting you in brazenly going after your dreams. Check it out here:https://www.instagram.com/actingonadream/
Sending you all a lot of love, Shandra Today’s “Inspiring Instagram” to check out is @worldoflabs! This is another fantastic and hilarious animal account. It’s dedicated to reposting hilarious, ridiculous, and downright adorable videos and photos of Labrador Retrievers. I used to have an amazing chocolate Labrador Retriever named Romeo, so both labs and this account hold a special place in my heart. So if you love hilarious dog videos almost as much as I do, check it out here:https://www.instagram.com/worldoflabs/
Today’s “Inspiring Instagram” to check out is @healthyisthenewskinny! This account is run by the brand “Healthy is the New Skinny” and is dedicated to creating a healthy image in the media for girls and women. They describe themselves as “a social media movement that works to challenge the limiting beauty ideal created by the media. Our goal is to educate and inspire people to chose health and wellness over our culture’s obsession with being ‘skinny.’”
Now, for anyone who has attended any of my workshops or seminars, you know that this is RIGHT up my alley! I love this account’s emphasis on building media awareness and understanding the negative impact the media has on the body image and self-esteem of girls. I also love that they promote health and both loving and accepting your body rather than trying to obtain an unrealistic ideal of beauty. @Healthyisthenewskinny posts beautiful pictures and stories of women sharing how they came to love their bodies, how they dropped the incessant need to always try to look “perfect,” and how they honored their health above all else. On top of that, the account posts some inspiring quotes and phrases which we all know I love as well. In a society in which we live on Instagram and constantly compare ourselves with photoshopped and filtered pictures of each other (as well as pictures of everyone's “perfect,” happy life rather than what’s really happening for them), this is an awesome account to follow and inject into your Instagram newsfeed. Check it out here:https://www.instagram.com/healthyisthenewskinny/ Today’s “Inspiring Instagram" to check out is @ted. This page is the official TED Talks Instagram account and it’s all about “ideas worth spreading.” While the account doesn’t share videos of specific TED talks, it does post stunning artwork, quotes from thought-leaders, and various images of humanity, nature, and courageous people. Moreover, every post has a link to a TED talk or page to learn more about the specific topic. So whether you are looking to learn more, get inspired, motivate, or to be awestruck, this is a fantastic account to check out: https://www.instagram.com/ted/
Today’s “Inspiring Instagram" to check out is @beawomanonfire. This account is all about inspiring and supporting women in living the life of their dreams. It’s another great account with daily uplifting phrases to motivate you, promote self-love and self-acceptance, and help you keep going even when things are rough. Want some extra inspiration in your day? Check out the account here: https://www.instagram.com/beawomanonfire/
Today’s “Inspiring Instagram” to check out is @harlowandsage. Like I mentioned before, I love love love animals. From dogs to cats, bunnies, birds, I love ‘em all. This account has three adorable dogs—two Dachshunds (Indiana and Reese) and one Weimaraner (Harlow). Harlow’s face always looks petrified, which cracks me up, and Indiana and Reese are so unbelievably cute. Not to mention, they all cuddle up under blankets and nap together. How could anyone’s heart not melt when looking at that?! If you also love adorable animals and want to put a smile on your face every day, check out their account here: https://www.instagram.com/harlowandsage/
Today’s “Inspiring Instagram” to check out is @inspiration. True to it’s name, this account posts inspiring and uplifting quotes with beautiful backgrounds. While these sayings span from great advice on friendship to tumblr posts, most promote developing a positive mindset, following your dreams, and staying true to yourself. A beautiful and positive account to brighten up your day! Check it out here: https://www.instagram.com/inspiration/
Today’s “Inspiring Instagram” to check out is @dictionarycom. As summer is approaching and we all just want to chill, this is a great way to keep your brain active and engaged. @Dictionarycom posts a new word every day that you can learn and master. By following this account, you can grow your brain and your vocabulary just by scrolling through your Instagram feed. More importantly, you can blow your English teacher away with your larruping impressive vocabulary daily. And finally, for all the sophomores/juniors who are in the midst of SAT prep, this account will certainly help. So for all the parents out there who may say that Instagram is a waste of time or who have a jeremiad about teens spending too much time on Instagram, here is an account to help change your mind and realize that belief is a furphy. Check it out here: https://www.instagram.com/dictionarycom/
#leadwithlove #teenempowerment #inspiringinstagramfriday #teengirls#teens #teenposts Hope you have a splendiferous, insouciant weekend! Today’s “Inspiring Instagram” to check out is @animals.co. And let me just say, this account is spectacular. It is filled with so many adorable pictures and videos of animals. From sleeping kittens, to puppies in stripped shirts, to a tub filled with golden retriever puppies, this account makes my heart just melt. I absolutely love animals (in fact, I consider myself a bit of a crazy cat lady) so I may be biased, but this account totally brightens up my day. If I am ever feeling stressed out, I pop on over to my Instagram feed and see a picture @animals.co posted and I instantly find myself smiling and more at ease.
