Inspiring Instagram Friday

Today’s “Inspiring Instagram” to check out is @healthyisthenewskinny! This account is run by the brand “Healthy is the New Skinny” and is dedicated to creating a healthy image in the media for girls and women. They describe themselves as “a social media movement that works to challenge the limiting beauty ideal created by the media. Our goal is to educate and inspire people to chose health and wellness over our culture’s obsession with being ‘skinny.’”
Now, for anyone who has attended any of my workshops or seminars, you know that this is RIGHT up my alley! I love this account’s emphasis on building media awareness and understanding the negative impact the media has on the body image and self-esteem of girls. I also love that they promote health and both loving and accepting your body rather than trying to obtain an unrealistic ideal of beauty. @Healthyisthenewskinny posts beautiful pictures and stories of women sharing how they came to love their bodies, how they dropped the incessant need to always try to look “perfect,” and how they honored their health above all else. On top of that, the account posts some inspiring quotes and phrases which we all know I love as well.
In a society in which we live on Instagram and constantly compare ourselves with photoshopped and filtered pictures of each other (as well as pictures of everyone's “perfect,” happy life rather than what’s really happening for them), this is an awesome account to follow and inject into your Instagram newsfeed. I am a teen-empowerment coach. I work with teen girls, ages 14-17, who struggle with self-acceptance, perfectionism, seeking attention from others, and deep sadness or anger.

Through education and coaching, I help teen girls learn to love all of who they are so that they can do well in school, find positive peer relationships, set up healthy boundaries, and find their greatness in the world.
